How to maintain an electric scooter?
2024-05-10
Electric scooters are currently the best choice for many young people to travel. However just like any other vehicle, your electric scooter will require regular maintenance to function properly. When you start to feel like something is wrong while riding, take the necessary steps to further investigate and resolve the issue.
When problems occur, here's what needs to be checked and maintained:
The tire
A common problem with electric scooters is the tires. Most electric scooter tires need to be replaced after about a year. If your tires are worn, it is recommended that you replace them as they will not be able to negotiate wet pavement and the risk of a puncture is higher. To extend the life of your tires, try to always inflate your tires to the specific/recommended pressure (not the maximum tire pressure). If the tire pressure is too high, less of the tire will be in contact with the ground. If tire pressure is too low, too much of the tire's surface area contacts the ground, increasing friction between the road and the tire. As a result, not only will your tires wear out prematurely, but they may also overheat. Therefore, keep your tires at the recommended pressure.
The battery
Electric scooter chargers usually have indicator lights. With most chargers, a red light means the scooter is charging, and a green light means it's fully charged. So if there is no light or a different color, the charger is most likely broken. Before panicking, it's wise to call the supplier to find out more information.
As for the battery, it is recommended that you charge it frequently. Even if you don’t use your scooter every day, make it a habit to charge it every 3 months to prevent it from degrading. However, do not charge the battery for too long or it may be damaged. Finally, you'll know a battery is old when it doesn't stay fully charged for an extended period of time. At this time you need to consider replacing it.
The brake
Scooter brakes need to be adjusted and brake pads replaced regularly to ensure your safety while riding your scooter. This is because brake pads wear out over time and require adjustment to function effectively.
For example, when your scooter brakes aren't working properly, you can look at the brake pads/shoes and check the brake line tension. Brake pads wear out over time and need to be adjusted or replaced to ensure they always work effectively. If the brake pads/shoes are fine, try tightening the brake lines. Additionally, you can perform some daily inspections to make sure your brake rims and discs are clean and lubricate the brake pivot points if necessary.
The bearing
For electric scooters, the bearings need to be maintained and cleaned after a period of use, as dirt and dust may accumulate during riding. It is recommended to use cleaning solvent to remove dirt and grease from the bearings, wait for them to dry, and then spray new grease into the bearings.
Cleaning
Do not "shower" your electric scooter when you wipe it down, especially when cleaning the area near the motor, engine, and battery. These parts are generally not suitable for contact with water.
To clean your scooter, you can start by wiping away dust from all exposed parts with a soft, smooth, dry cloth, then clean it with a cloth moistened with detergent - a regular detergent you use for cleaning cloths will do. You can also wipe down the seats with disinfectant wipes and then dry them. After cleaning your scooter, we recommend that you cover your scooter to prevent dust accumulation.
